Welcome to the weekend!
Christian HallHi there!

This week, Apple boss Steve Jobs called on music labels to license their music free of Digital Rights Management (DRM) to Apple and others, to create a "truly interoperable music marketplace". In an open letter, the Apple CEO said his company is the wrong target for people who are concerned about DRM: "Perhaps those unhappy with the current situation should redirect their energies towards persuading the music companies to sell their music DRM-free." It's the record labels that insist on making Apple's iTunes store resell its music with DRM (yet 90 per cent of the music they sell themselves via CDs is free of restrictions), he notes.

Google has finally opened Google Mail for everyone. The service, known as Gmail outside the UK, offers almost 3GB of online storage space and an anti-spam filter.

ntl:Telewest officially rebranded as Virgin Media this week, offering "quad-play" TV, broadband and mobile and landline phone services in one package. In addition, the company is launching its first branded television channel, Virgin Central - an on-demand entertainment channel.

Have a great weekend!
