EDITORIAL INTRO FOR ISSUE 169
“Our neocortex enables us to make more measured judgements and analyse future risk”
I recently read a fantastic Wired article on risk-taking. The upshot was that taking risks isn’t easy, and that it’s your brain’s fault. Assessing initial risk is a job carried out by a part of the brain called the amygdala, which is responsible for the “fight or flight” response. This is great if you’re being attacked by a ninja, but not when the risk is more complicated, such as deciding whether to leave full-time employment and go it alone. Thankfully, our brains have developed. Our neocortex enables us to make more measured judgements and analyse future risk, but it can also instil irrational fears that hold us back.
In this month’s main feature, we’ve tried to cover all the areas of becoming your own boss, because it would appear that when it comes to taking risks, your brain just can’t be trusted!
