EDITORIAL INTRO FOR ISSUE 165

“Site owners are usually the architects of their own downfall, having failed to secure their sites”

Until recently, I only had three usernames and passwords that I used online. This hadn’t been a problem, until I signed in to one of my favourite sites to be informed that it had been hacked, and that 30,000 usernames and passwords had been stolen. Great!

Initially, I felt a bit stupid for using the same details across a number of sites, and any security expert would probably concur. But I don’t feel stupid any more, just angry. I only have one PIN that provides access to all my money, and if my bank lost those details, I’d freak out like a ninja. But websites get off lightly. We often give them the benefit of the doubt, as they’re targeted by pesky hackers. But the reality is that these site owners are usually the architects of their own downfall, having failed to secure their sites adequately. With this in mind, we’d like to know what security-related articles you’d like to see in future issues of .net. Like many site owners, security is an area we’ve neglected to date, and we intend to redress the balance.
