/Graphics/ Create a striking logo

13/05/2008 | Filed under Develop > Graphics

Your brief is to create a bold, high-impact logo for a design portfolio. Tom Hartshorn walks you through it, illustrating his design tricks along the way

Creating a logo from scratch can be a fairly daunting task, no matter how experienced you are. Putting together an icon to represent yourself is one of the hardest things a graphic designer can do, and pulling together a logo for a client is no walk in the park, either! Why? Well, it has to say the right things but not be overly complicated, it often has to work through a variety of mediums, and it has to be memorable enough to remind a user of what they saw when they visited your site.

That’s the project this issue: building a logo that stands out from the crowd and makes an impact on the people viewing your website. But what if you can’t draw to save your life, and finding a complementary colour scheme is a job that makes you want to run for the hills? What if form and shape feel like a foreign language, and Times New Roman is the only font you’re familiar with? Don’t worry: I’ll show you some design rules and tricks that will set you firmly on the right path. With the clever exploitation of cheap stock graphics, combined with some useful online tools, you can put together a logo that you’ll be happy to place front and centre on your site.

Apart from having to work out the math’s question (which in my horror took a few seconds) i loved this article.

This logo looks like it should have taken a lot longer then it did to create and i love the "grunge" look about it.

Ive never been able to create impressive logos before, but i can see now ive been going the wrong way about things! I can’t guarantee that my end result will look this good but I could sure give it a try! - I mean I’m a creative person after all!
