EDITORIAL INTRO FOR ISSUE 174

“If you don’t add the new instruction to your code, then your site will only ever render in IE7”

The company has announced something called “version targeting” for future releases of its web browser, which will enable developers to add a little bit of code that tells Internet Explorer to render a page for a specific version of IE. The idea is that Microsoft doesn’t want new browsers ‘breaking’ sites.

Not much wrong with that, you might think. But there’s more. If you neglect to add the new instruction to your code, then your site will only ever render in IE7, even if someone is using IE9! (Read more at digital-web.com, where Matthew Pennell has compiled a cross-section of opinion.) So has Microsoft lost the plot – or is this a step in the right direction?
