EDITORIAL INTRO FOR ISSUE 178
“If you buy online, it doesn’t matter how vigilant you are, you can still fall foul of card cloning”
Being hit by online fraud is horrible, and can result in a mixture of emotions. People often feel like they’ve done something wrong. The reality is, if you buy things online, it doesn’t matter how vigilant you are, you can still fall foul of card cloning and the like. This was the case for my wife recently, who found that someone was making online purchases with her credit card details.
After the initial shock, the first thing you worry about is whether you’ll get your money back. In most cases you will, and the ultimate victim will be the online merchants who took the fraudulent payment – as they’re the ones the banks will demand your money from, via payments called chargebacks. The more steps merchants take to avoid these chargebacks, the less fraud there will be, and the net will be a much safer place for all of us.
