“Parents should be able to see exactly what their children are doing while they’re online”

On 12 June, just before 5am, my wife and I celebrated the birth of our first child, Daisy May. In an instant, our lives transformed. We were no longer a two, but a three. And with the joys of parenthood comes a burden of responsibility that can fry your brain a little.

Responsible Dan is already projecting years into the future, and I’m wondering how I’ll deal with certain scenarios. One of these is internet use.

At first I thought I’d rely on monitoring software. Not any more. I’m now firmly of the opinion that parents should be able to see exactly what their children are doing while they’re online. But a lot will change in the next 10 years, as will the ease with which you can keep tabs on your kids.

There’s only one thing for it. The first time Daisy asks whether she can use the net, I shall calmly unplug my router, make my way into the garden and drop it in the pond.
