EDITORIAL INTRO FOR ISSUE 194
“You leave an access point open, and someone downloads illegal files? You get cut off”
As a kid, I did a few illegal things. I’m not going to reveal all of them here, but I’ll make one shameful revelation: between 1985 and 1992 I, like every kid I knew, borrowed albums from my local library and recorded them. The librarian knew what I was up to, but there was no talk of revoking my membership. And I’m pretty sure the music industry was doing okay at the time.
Fast-forward to 2009 (where I reckon I’ve now spent around £3,000 on CDs), and Peter Mandelson (who billed the taxpayer for nearly £3,000 of work on his home shortly after announcing he was standing down as an MP) is getting tough on file-sharers, with proposals that repeat offenders have their net connections cut off. Your kids download without your knowledge? You get cut off. You leave an access point open, and someone downloads illegal files? You get cut off. As former digital enhancement minister Tom Watson says, Mandelson’s regressive, tide-halting antics are like those of Cnut the Great. Close enough.
