/Open Source/ Make a podcast

05/12/2007 | Filed under Develop > Open Source

If you’ve always fancied creating your own podcast, but haven’t known where to start, this is the tutorial for you. Karl Hodge shows you how it’s done using free software

The initial moment of hype has passed for podcasting, but there are still numerous things you can do with sound that you can’t do with video, especially if you’re running on a meagre budget. You don’t need fancy camcorders or video editing know-how to piece together a podcast – a decent microphone and some open source software will do the job quite nicely.

Audacity is our choice for the task – an open source, multi-track, sound recording and editing tool that’s available in Windows, Mac OS X and Linux flavours. It’s not the prettiest software in the podcast fashion parade, but it makes up for it with stability and features that you’d be hard-pressed to find in some commercial packages.

You’re also going to need a couple of other tools. Podifier is free software that creates RSS feeds for podcasts. It’s easy to use and includes built-in FTP tools, so when you’ve finished updating a feed, you can upload it with the same package. You’ll need iTunes to publish your finished podcast, too.

I have used audacity for years. It has gotten much easier to use. It's one of the few open source products that I've found consistently useful, and stable.
